IOC launches 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games Bid Process

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today launched the bidding process to host the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2012. A letter was sent out to all National Olympic Committees (NOCs) informing them of the procedure and documentation available for cities interested in bidding for the Games.

The schedule for the election of the Host City of the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2012 is as follows:

6 March 2008:NOCs to inform the IOC of the names of their candidate cities
19 June 2008:Submission to the IOC of the cities’ Candidature Files
August 2008: Panel of Experts to propose a shortlist of Candidate Cities
October 2008: IOC Evaluation Commission to submit its report to the IOC Executive Board
November 2008:IOC Executive Board to submit its recommendation to the IOC members for a postal vote
December 2008: Announcement of the Host City of the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2012
The Winter Youth Olympic Games – age group 14 to 18 - will bring together approximately 1,000 athletes and 500 officials. The sports programme will include the seven Winter Olympic sports on the programme of the 2014 Games in Sochi, with a limited number of disciplines and events by sport which are of particular interest to the younger generation.
